Brakes - Frequently asked questions and answers
How do car brakes work?
Brakes are one of the most important parts of a car. Sometimes you need to brake hard, so it's important that they're at their best! Inside the wheel is a brake disc. When it is squeezed, the wheel stops. In passenger cars, hydraulic and mechanical brakes are most common, but in heavier vehicles, electronic brakes are common.
Most vehicles today have so-called "dual-circuit systems", which means that even if two of the wheels lose braking power, the other two can take over.
What are brake pads?
Brake pads, or brake shoes as they are also known, are the part of the braking system that presses against the brake disc to stop the car. Brake pads are a consumable item, and need to be replaced from time to time.
What are ABS brakes?
ABS brakes are Anti-locking Braking Systems. When you brake hard, the wheels lock up. The ABS brakes sense this and release some of the brake pressure so the car can still roll. That means you can break and steer at the same time.
